If you were put in an fMRI scanner and the word “NO” flashed up for less than one second, the person operating the scanner would see a sudden release of stres-
producing hormones. In fact,
just seeing a list of
negative words for a few seconds will make a highly anxious or depressed person feel worse, because the hormones interrupt the normal functioning of your brain. This book conveys to the reader how many negative

messages we are confronted with, in a newspaper, on a day to day basis. The aim of the book is to make the reader aware of how these words may affect someone with depression.
